Broadband Optical-Electrical Conversion (O/E & E/O) and Optical Link Systems

Overview

Design and manufacture of optoelectronic conversion devices (O/E and E/O) that interconvert optical and electrical signals, along with integrated optical link systems. In-house development spans wideband O/E converters covering the visible to near-infrared range, light sources with varying wavelengths and modulation schemes, and bidirectional multiplexed communication systems carrying multiple channels over a single optical fiber. The primary focus is optical transmission for measurement and control applications where standard off-the-shelf optical communication components cannot meet demanding requirements for bandwidth, noise, and phase stability. Contract development in the optoelectronics field, centred on electronic circuit design expertise, is also available.

Technical Features

  • Wideband O/E conversion: Si-based PD covering 320–1000 nm, DC to 3.0 GHz; InGaAs PIN PD covering 900–1650 nm, DC to 1.5 GHz. Selectable combinations of sensitivity (300–1000 V/W), active diameter (0.25–1.0 mm), and acceptance NA (0.2 / 0.25 / 0.5).
  • High-sensitivity models: For weak-light measurement — Si-based models with conversion gains of 10 kV/W and 100 kV/W; InGaAs-based model at 20 kV/W.
  • Differential-amplifier O/E: Ultra-low-noise differential optical receiver, DC to 1 GHz. Designed for balanced detection in medical OCT (optical coherence tomography).
  • Split-PD O/E module: Two-segment photodiode module operating DC to 80 MHz, paired with an arithmetic unit performing addition, subtraction, and division. Intended for cantilever displacement detection in high-speed AFM.
  • Low-phase-drift O/E: Temperature-controlled O/E module using a Peltier element, designed to achieve a phase drift target of less than 0.1° at 972 MHz (temperature 27 ± 2 °C, humidity 15–65 %RH). Wavelength range 1000–1650 nm, modulation bandwidth 1 MHz to 2 GHz, output 400 mVp-p square wave into 50 Ω. NIM standard.
  • Modulated light sources (E/O): LD-based models covering 400–1300 nm; VCSEL-based models at 670 nm and 850 nm. Calibration light sources available in configurations of up to eight modules. High-frequency superposition sources with variable level are also offered.
  • Optical link systems: Ultra-low-jitter link with RMS jitter ≤ 1 ps (960 MHz reference signal); low-noise, low-distortion analogue optical link, 2 kHz to 3 GHz; TTL (0–5 V) and NIM standard links; PWM optical link, DC to 10 MHz.
  • Time-division-multiplexed optical communications: Bidirectional transmission at 2.97 Gbps in both the uplink and downlink directions over a single optical fiber. Uplink at 1.3 µm / downlink at 1.55 µm; receive sensitivity −30 dBm. Uplink carries 18 channels (HD-SDI ×1, NTSC ×3, RS-232C ×4, logic ×8, RS-485 ×2); downlink carries 14 channels. A monitor terminal outputting 0–5 V proportional to received optical power is provided.

Target Applications and Fields

  • Transmission of high-frequency reference signals and low-power control in particle accelerator facilities, where phase stability and jitter directly affect beam quality.
  • Signal transmission in and around nuclear fusion experimental reactors — PWM optical links for environments that demand electrical isolation and high noise immunity.
  • Cable systems for deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicles, with bidirectional multiplexing of video, control, and serial signals over a single optical fiber.
  • Detector stages in biomedical and surface optical measurement systems, including medical OCT, high-speed AFM, and laser Doppler blood-flow meters.
  • Contract development of industrial measurement equipment, such as high-speed laser drivers (rise time ≤ 1 ns) for optical disc inspection systems and infrared moisture meters (1800 nm and 1940 nm).
